BENIGN SKIN GROWTHS

Benign Skin Growths

Benign skin growths are common, non-cancerous changes that can develop anywhere on the skin and often become more noticeable with age. They include conditions such as seborrhoeic keratoses, skin tags, cysts and other harmless lumps or lesions.

While many require no treatment, they can sometimes become irritated, uncomfortable or cause concern because of their appearance or changes over time.

Any new, changing or unusual skin growth should be assessed to confirm the diagnosis and rule out a more concerning skin lesion.

What are benign skin growths?

Benign skin growths are non-cancerous changes that can develop on or beneath the skin. They vary in appearance, size and location.

Common types include:

  • Seborrhoeic keratoses

  • Skin tags

  • Cysts

  • Other harmless lumps or skin lesions

Many benign skin growths do not require treatment. However, assessment may be appropriate if a growth is new, changing, irritated, uncomfortable or causing concern.

Our approach to benign skin growths at Greystones Dermatology

A dermatology assessment can help identify the type of skin growth and determine whether treatment or removal is appropriate.

Depending on the individual lesion, treatment options may include:

  • Cryotherapy

  • Cautery

  • Minor skin surgery

We will assess the growth, explain the diagnosis and discuss whether treatment is necessary and the most appropriate next steps for you.
