ACNE

Acne

Acne is a common, chronic skin condition that affects the hair follicles and oil-producing glands. It can affect the face, chest, shoulders and back and may present as blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed spots, pustules, nodules or cysts.

In some patients, acne can also lead to persistent pigmentation or scarring.

Early assessment and treatment can help manage symptoms and reduce the risk of permanent scarring.

What is acne?

Acne can vary considerably in its type and severity. Common features include:

  • Blackheads and whiteheads

  • Inflamed spots

  • Pustules

  • Nodules or cysts

  • Persistent pigmentation following acne

  • Scarring

Acne most commonly affects areas where there are more oil-producing glands, including the face, chest, shoulders and back.

Our approach to acne at Greystones Dermatology

  • Topical treatments

  • Oral antibiotics

  • Hormonal treatment where appropriate

  • Oral isotretinoin for selected patients with severe or persistent acne

We will assess your skin, discuss your concerns and any previous treatments, and explain the most appropriate treatment options and next steps for you.
