Children’s care

At Greystones Dermatology, we welcome children of all ages, from babies and young children through to teenagers. We provide assessment and care for a wide range of childhood skin conditions in a calm, welcoming environment.

With over 30 years’ experience as a GP, Dr Joachim Jansen has extensive experience caring for children and understands the importance of making younger patients and their parents feel comfortable, listened to and reassured.

Common Skin Conditions in Children

Children can experience a wide range of skin concerns as they grow. At Greystones Dermatology, we assess and manage common paediatric skin conditions including eczema and atopic dermatitis, rashes, acne, birthmarks, moles, warts, skin infections and other changes to the skin, hair or nails.

Every child is different, so Dr Jansen takes time to understand their symptoms and recommend an appropriate approach to treatment and ongoing care. So common conditions include:

Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection in children that produces small, smooth, dome-shaped bumps, often with a tiny central indentation. It usually resolves naturally with time. Treatment may be considered when lesions are persistent, troublesome, spreading significantly or associated with eczema.

Warts

Warts are benign skin growths caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). They are particularly common on the hands and feet in children. Many disappear naturally, but persistent or troublesome warts may be treated with topical preparations, cryotherapy or other methods depending on the child's age and the location of the wart.

Atopic Dermatitis in Children

Atopic dermatitis is common in babies and children and causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin. Symptoms may interfere with sleep and scratching can lead to secondary infection. Treatment focuses on restoring the skin barrier, reducing inflammation and itch, avoiding relevant irritants and treating infection where present.
