MELASMA

Melasma

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes patches of brown or grey-brown pigmentation, most often on the face. It commonly affects the cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip and can become more noticeable following sun exposure.

Hormonal changes, pregnancy, certain medications and genetics may also contribute to the development of melasma.

As melasma can be persistent and may recur, ongoing management is often important.

What is melasma?

Melasma is a pigmentation condition in which areas of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin.

Factors that may contribute to melasma include:

  • Sun exposure

  • Hormonal changes

  • Pregnancy

  • Certain medications

  • Genetics

The extent and severity of pigmentation can vary from person to person.
